FAQs

Is the whole room smoke method an effective procedure for carrying out room fabric integrity testing?

Our experience has shown that this method does not reliably allow identification of the presence and location of leak paths in the room fabric. The negative pressure smoke pencil method should be used in all containment facilities to carry out leak testing and to confirm satisfactory sealing has been achieved during any remedial works. Quantitative leak rate testing may also be carried out as part of validation of new facilities.

How often does room integrity testing need to be carried out?

Full integrity testing should be carried out annually as a minimum. More frequent testing may be indicated where multiple leak or recurrent paths are identified or where significant amounts of sealant have been applied to seal leaks. Many laboratories carry out regular testing by laboratory staff on for example a 3-monthly basis. All leak paths identified must be retested after completion of remedial works and the results of this recorded.

Do I need to carry out a fumigation efficacy study?

The short answer is yes. To comply with the COSHH Regulations the effectiveness of laboratory emergency procedures, including fumigation, should be validated under operating conditions simulating an emergency condition.

Does the fumigation study have to be carried out by CCTech to allow the laboratory to be registered on the CCTech Emergency Fumigation Scheme?

This is not a condition of registration on the CCTech Scheme. We would need to review the details of any previous fumigation study to ensure that the study complied with ACDP guidance and our emergency fumigation protocols replicate the procedures used.

Can CCTech carry out TExT inspections of discharges from containment laboratories

Yes. Engineers have been trained (P601) and have experience in assessing discharge systems for containment and other laboratory systems.

Are there any pre-requisites to joining CCTech’s emergency fumigation scheme?

You should have a validated fumigation procedure in place to comply with the COSHH Regulations and ACDP guidelines. We can either carry this out for you or review details of a previous fumigation study to ensure it complies with ACDP guidance and enable our emergency fumigation protocols to replicate the procedures used.

Over the last 5 years the Department of Medicine, University of Cambridge has been developing a large integrated 7 laboratory (including flowcytometry cell sorting lab) CL3 facility as part of a new building housing the Cambridge Institute of Therapeutic Immunnology and Infectious Disease.

CCTech have been involved as consultants from the initial design stages of the project all the to validation and commisioning, they now also hold the emergency fumigation contract for the facility for the next 12 months. After the first 12 month in use facility shutdown they carried out full sealability and integrity testing, fumigation mode testing and calibration of magnahelic instruments. CCTech have overseen all aspects of the proposed design, building by sub contractors, CAT, testing, validation and commissioning. In particular their expertise has been absolutely invaluable over the last 12 months of the project as the facility went through final construction and the critical stages of commission and validation. Their expertise and extensive experience have been invaluable in bringing a complex and ambitious project to the point where we had validated and functioning laboratories. I am also very pleased to now be working with them going forwards providing inspection and testing services as well as emergency formaldehyde fumigation cover.

In particular I have worked closely with Steve Robertson on the project and found him to be highly knowledgeable and effective at complex problem solving and driving the project forwards being an essential independent consultant from our contractors CAT.

I do not hesitate to recommend CCTech, it has been a pleasure to work with such an effective company in such a specialist field. I would be happy to be contacted if you wish to discuss our experiences further.

Dr Mark Wills, Principal Investigator, Dept Biological Safety Officer, Chair University Biological Safety Committee - University of Cambridge Department of Medicine

I am writing this letter to express my appreciation for the outstanding work that CCTech Ltd has achieved on our completed project - The Paterson Redevelopment Project.

Our collaboration with CCTech Ltd began in September 2019 and ended in April 2022.

From the initial planning stages to the final implementation, CCTech Ltd were really important in the success of our project and their team's knowledge, attention to detail, creativity, and commitment to excellence were evident. The project was carried out on a very challenging timeline and your team went to great lengths to ensure that all milestones were met, and we that had a very successful move into our new facility. I am delighted to say that having now operated in the new building some time the design ideas that CCTech Ltd contributed have delivered a highly efficient and effective facility.

We look forward to working with CCTech Ltd on any relevant future projects and are happy to recommend your services to other organisations.

Thank you once again for your committed service.

Stuart Pepper, Chief Laboratory Officer - Cancer Research UK Manchester Institute

Steven Cubitt and CCTech Team worked closely with the User team from RIBA Stage 1 to supporting us post hand-over. Their understanding of the requirements of barriered biomedical research facilities and the different requirements of the research, equipment, design and construction guided us through the process.

CCTech have been supportive, responsive and have carried out all consultancy tasks to programme, and meet the overall ambitions of the project to create a facility for world leading researchers and the training of next generation of scientists in cancer immunology.

Richard Reid, BRF Operations Manager - Southampton University Centre for Cancer Immunology

I first met Steve Robertson as our expert for CL3 UHND, where he attended annually to complete room sealing integrity checks (as part of Crowthorne Ltd).

Over the last 5 years Steve Robertson has provided key health and safety advice, CL3 management guidance, and key CL3 design advice, in particular through commissioned work via CCTech, allowing us to develop, design, build and commission our new CL3 laboratory. This included:

  • End to end advice and guidance on the design of the new UHND CL3 from concept to completion and hand over.
  • Vetting of initial design specification, the design for the CL3 at each step and the final design.
  • Key support with preparation of the tender for the design and build project including technical support and an active role in the tender team.
  • Working with specialist designers, engineers, architects, PFI company and MAT.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the legal and design requirements for CL3 against all standards including reviewing the design against these.
  • Multiple site visits, meetings and remote working at short notice.
  • Critical advice and guidance on site, risk mitigation, running of Darlington Memorial Hospital CL3 as business continuity site during the UHND build. This included an extensive site audit.
  • Planning commissioning stage including all failure scenarios.
  • Witnessing commissioning at all key points including reports.
  • DESOPs documentation provided in full as the basis or all of our local SOPs.
  • Post project after care.
Andy Wilde, Cellular Sciences Service Manager - University Hospital North Durham

May I firstly thank you for attending site so promptly after our initial request and whilst I wasn’t available to meet you myself, I have heard excellent reports from my colleagues of works carried out.

Dr Jane Armstrong, Technical Manager - Institute of Infection Veterinary and Ecological Sciences, University of Liverpool

Firstly, I’d like to thank you for the support given to the department regarding the validation of our CL3 Lab, especially Iain & Steve.

Dave Younger, Design & Development Manager, NTH Solutions LLP - North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust

Thank you so much for the HSE update, it is very much appreciated! I have a meeting on Thursday with Estates and the AE, so this will be helpful.
